What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is the medical practice where a chiropractor uses their hands to manipulate the musculoskeletal system in order to improve or return function to a part of the body, and to improve and support the function of the nervous system.
When you get chiropractic work done, it’s called an adjustment, as a chiropractor is manipulating the spinal column in order to adjust and ultimately improve the body’s function.
Founded in the 1890s by D.D. Palmer, chiropractic has been a tried and true form of alternative medicine that has helped millions of people reclaim their lives by enabling their bodies to function optimally and healthily.
How Does It Work?
As we mentioned above, chiropractic adjustments are a form of alternative medicine that require a chiropractor to use their hands (and sometimes small instruments) to manipulate the spine and body, optimizing function and improving wellness.
A chiropractor is an expert in anatomy, equipping them with the knowledge to target adjustments to provide the most effective results following an adjustment. Through the course of the adjustment, a chiropractor uses their hands or instruments to apply sudden, localized pressure to a specified location.
This pressure usually results in what most people call a ‘back crack.’ Interestingly enough, nothing is cracking when you get a chiropractic adjustment. This sensation is actually air pockets trapped in between joints and vertebrae that are being released when the chiropractor applies pressure to an area.
Once these air pockets are popped, the affected joints or vertebrae will have improved movement and function.
How Is Chiropractic Beneficial For Your Health?
First and foremost, by receiving chiropractic adjustments, you’re working to correct misalignments and remove those pesky air pockets that inhibit full bodily function. However, to get more specific, there are two major health benefits that are associated with chiropractic care: preventative health and pain/injury mitigation and management.
When it comes to preventative health, chiropractic can be monumental for keeping your body optimized and aligned. When your body is properly aligned, stress and pressure that it experiences throughout daily life is more evenly and properly distributed throughout the body. This essentially prevents your body from overworking or stressing a particular area, preventing complications with those areas down the line.
When it comes to pain and injury mitigation, chiropractic is a wonderful resource because it’s extremely effective at working and realigning areas of the body that have been injured. Chiropractors are able to locate the areas that need to be realigned, and proceed as necessary.
Another reason why chiropractic care is a great solution for dealing with injuries and pain is that it’s an alternative medicine that does not require medication to deal with the pain.
